Products - Facing Brick - Site & Building Practice -

Delivery
• Schedule deliveries carefully to avoid overstocking and the need for long-term storage

Offloading
• Bricks should be offloaded on to a firm, level and secure base, preferably on to boards or pallets.

• Offloading should be as close to work areas as possible to minimise subsequent movement and handling of bricks.

Stacking
• Stacks should he formed in a manner which permits easy removal of bricks, avoids risk of collapse and which does not restrict further deliveries.

• Maintain the protection of the shrinkwrapping as long as possible. Then open packs in such a way that the wrappers do not trap water in wet conditions. Alternatively, provide some other form of cover which allows free passage of air.

Handling
• Avoid the movement of facing bricks by barrow, dumper truck or by other rough or haphazard means.

• Do not overload work points, this can lead to spoilage and misuse of bricks.

• Single-colour facings should be taken from a mixture of packs, even different loads, to minimise risk of colour banding.

• Multis should be removed from packs in 'fingers', following the directions included on the packs, to ensure good mixing.

N.B. Careless offloading, stacking and handling has been shown, in one BDA report, to cause 20-25% wastage of all bricks generally.

Laying
• "Turn" facings as they are laid in order to present the best face.

• Avoid the use of blemished bricks in main facework, use them in 'hidden' areas.

• Ensure consistency of mortar colour, variations seriously detract from the finished wall appearance.

• Bricks should always be laid on a full mortar bed and vertical cross joints (perpends) should be filled.
