Colinwell supply Super Acoustic Block to Anaerobic Digester Plant Date Posted: 17/10/2011 15:43:13
Colinwell supplies their new Acoustic Block to Blakiston Houston Estates 1.2m Anaerobic Digester (AD) plant on the outskirts of Belfast.
One of the first of a new generation of AD Plants, it digests slurry, grass, whole crop and maize to produce enough Biogas to run a 250KW combined heat and power plant.
Colinwells Super Acoustic Blocks were incorporated into the design of this AD plant due to their excellent noise reduction qualities. Replacing the more traditional internal Paint Grade block, Colinwells Super Acoustic Block utilise Helmholtz resonator principles, efficiently absorbing both direct and reflected sounds through integrated slots, whilst absorbing low frequency sounds over a narrow range of frequencies, effectively reduce any noise pollution which would otherwise be emitted from the AD plant.
Colinwell Acoustic Blocks can also be used to control noise in Plant Rooms, Factories and along Roads and Railways to form Sound Barriers.
Colinwell gets the green light for environmental endeavours. Date Posted: 19/09/2011 14:53:46
Colinwell is celebrating its green credentials today after being awarded for its responsible approach to sustaining the environment.
Colinwell Concrete Ltd, based at the foot of the Belfast Hills, received the internationally-recognised ISO 14001 accreditation, for its control and improvement of its environmental performance, the first concrete block manufacturer in the Belfast area to do so.
Colinwell Director, Phelim McQuillan, said: Companies should not measure their success by how full their order book is, or by turnover, rather they should be aware of their impact on society and the environment as a whole. Colinwell has been around for over 100 years now; we must be profitable while addressing our sustainability and respecting the environment we use every day after all, it has been responsible for keeping us in business at this location for the last century!
Colinwell Concrete is a key player in the block-making industry. It has manufactured the building blocks for mush of the modern built environment of Belfast such as the Waterfront Hall, Odyssey Arena and major developments at the Royal Victoria Hospital from the 1940s to the present day.
Joint Managing Director, Donal McQuillan, added, Colinwell blocks have formed the foundations and fabric for a number of Belfasts landmark buildings. With this accreditation we can now ensure that we continue to do so, in a sustainable and responsible manner for future generations.
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of their environmental responsibilities, and want to know that their suppliers are equally committed to environmental best practices. This accreditation shows that Colinwell are just that, environmentally aware and planning for the future.

Colinwell builds on 130 years of success Date Posted: 18/04/2011 10:44:42
Colinwell is today marking over 130 years of success with an expansion to its already booming business.
Colinwell Concrete Ltd, established in 1880, is literally building on its success with the opening of a new walling and paving centre for the public at its premises on the slopes of the Colin Mountain.
From humble beginnings under the stewardship of Belfast farmer, John McQuillan, in the late 19th Century, to the now booming business led by his great grandsons, Phelim and Donal McQuillan, Colinwell Concrete Ltd has stood the test of time, and now employs 18 people in its Belfast plant.
I am delighted to announce the expansion of Colinwell Concrete today, said Joint Managing Director, Phelim McQuillan.
Our new walling and paving centre will offer fantastic products that have, until now, only been available to trade customers.
Our business has a great history, and its something we hope to build on by continuing to come up with innovative ways to expand in this time of recession which is hitting the construction sector hardest.
Donal added: The business was started by my great grandfather, John, back in the 1880s when he discovered a deposit of limestone on his farm at Colinwell - so named because of the large natural spring well which is located at the site on the slopes of Colin Mountain.
John built kilns and began processing the quarried limestone by burning it with coal to form calcium oxide, a widely used fertilizer and mortar ingredient of the time. I doubt he thought then that his fledgling business would eventually contribute to the construction of flagship buildings for Belfast, such as the Odyssey.
In the years that followed Johns son Gerard and grandson Hugh began quarrying the basalt stone, which also lay in the area, to produce aggregates for road construction, and in time, for the manufacture of concrete blocks.
Today Colinwell continues the family tradition of manufacturing quality construction and concrete walling products.

Colinwell Supplies Largest Segmental Retaining Wall in Great Britain Date Posted: 29/06/2009 12:35:33
In September 2007 Colinwell began supplying a new project at a new Asda distribution centre in Chepstow, south Wales. It was the largest to date segmental wall to have been built in Britain and some 60,000 wall blocks were manufactured at Colinwells site in Dunmurry (for pictures see projects).
Joint Managing Director Phelim McQuillan explains that the Chepstow project proved that the size of the job and distance to the market does not pose a problem for the family owned company which has been in business since 1888. "Our experience for manufacturing product for this contract and organising the delivery of over 70 loads to the site leaves us confident to tackle anything anywhere"
Allan Block was chosen for the Chepstow project because it offered an aesthetically pleasing, cost effective method of building a large retaining wall and particularly as it allowed on site earth to be redistributed and used as a backfill material to the wall.
Apart from the blocks and geogrid required to reinforce the earth behind the wall and a small amount of stone, for forming the wall foundation and drainage layer behind it, no other materials had to be imported onto site to construct the wall which averaged 8 metres in height over 750 metres of its length.
"In such challenging economic times" Mr McQuillan adds "we all have to reassess how we do things and Allanblock offers a more sustainable approach to the age old problem or forming retaining walls which have become increasingly important in developing land efficiently.
